Commercial life cycle assessment software packages are general-purpose environmental modelling environments. You define unit processes, connect them into a product system, attach a background database for everything upstream of your gate, choose an impact assessment method, and the software solves the inventory. SimaPro, published by PRé Sustainability, is the most widely used and is priced per seat on an annual subscription, publicly quoted at roughly €6,100–7,800 depending on plan. GaBi, now sold by Sphera as LCA for Experts, is quote-only and aimed at large manufacturers, with a proprietary content library running to tens of thousands of datasets. Umberto occupies similar ground with a stronger material-flow-cost angle.

How it works

The database is the product. The interface is largely a way of assembling licensed background data into a system and solving it. That is why price tracks database scope rather than features, and why the same software with a different database can return a materially different answer.

When Commercial LCA suites wins

Choose commercial life cycle assessment software when the output has to survive scrutiny: an Environmental Product Declaration, a customer sustainability questionnaire with audit rights, a CSRD or CDP disclosure, or a peer-reviewed publication. Also choose one when you need impact categories beyond climate, regionalised water scarcity, or defensible uncertainty analysis. If someone external will check your number, you need the database and the audit trail that comes with it.

openLCA & free tools in detail

openLCA, the free life cycle assessment software built by GreenDelta since 2006, is open source and is a genuinely professional tool rather than a stripped-down one. It supports the same impact assessment methods and the same commercial databases as the paid suites. The catch is that the free part is the software, not the data: a working ecoinvent licence through openLCA Nexus still costs on the order of CHF 1,650 per year. Separately, screening calculators answer a narrower question. They accept process parameters directly, build the inventory for you from open emission factors, and return a footprint plus a hotspot breakdown without any database licence at all.

How it works

Screening tools trade breadth for speed and transparency. Because they rely on openly licensed factors — US EPA eGRID and ElectricityLCI, IPCC global warming potentials, UK Government conversion factors — every number can be traced to a public source, which is rarely true inside a commercial background database.

Choose free tooling when you are deciding rather than reporting. Comparing single-use against stainless, testing whether a titer improvement or a grid switch moves the number further, or working out whether media or plastics deserve attention are all screening questions. A screening answer that is directionally right in an afternoon beats a verified answer in six weeks when the decision is which of two process options to develop.

The headline licence fee understates the real cost of commercial LCA software, because the expensive component is the background database rather than the application. The larger and less visible cost is people. Which is better, SimaPro or GaBi?
Neither LCA software package is categorically better. Herrmann and Moltesen (2015) modelled identical systems in both and found the results differ, largely because of how each implements impact assessment methods and which background data it draws on. SimaPro is more common in consultancy and academia and is priced per seat with published plans; GaBi, now Sphera LCA for Experts, is quote-only and aimed at large manufacturers with deep proprietary datasets. Pick on database fit for your sector, your verifier's expectations, and budget, rather than on a general quality ranking.
Is openLCA really free?
The software is genuinely free and open source, and it is professionally capable rather than a limited edition. The cost sits in the data. Most serious studies need a commercial background database, and an ecoinvent licence through openLCA Nexus is on the order of CHF 1,650 per year.
