BioProcess Tools is a free site of bioprocess calculators. We try to keep our analytics setup minimal and respectful of your data. This page explains exactly what we collect and how to opt out.

What we collect

• Page views and session activity — which calculators you open, which presets you click, when you export results.
• Session recordings and heatmaps (Microsoft Clarity). We use Microsoft Clarity, a third-party analytics service, to capture anonymised session recordings and heatmaps (mouse movement, clicks, scrolling) so we can see where our tools confuse people and fix them. Clarity masks the text you type by default. See Microsoft's privacy statement.
• Tool inputs at the category level — for example, "the user selected CHO and a 2 L bioreactor." We use this to understand which organisms, vessels, and applications are most useful to our audience. We do not store the numeric values you type (volumes, densities, concentrations, etc.).
• Coarse device info — browser, OS family, language, country derived from your browser language.
• A hashed IP — your IP address is one-way hashed (SHA-256) before storage, used only for de-duplication.

What we do not collect

• No advertising or cross-site ad trackers (Facebook Pixel, advertising cookies, etc.). For traffic and usability analytics we use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
• No cross-site tracking. We don't know what other sites you visit.
• No personal identifiers from ordinary use of the calculators. We only hold personal details when you deliberately give them to us: subscribing to the newsletter, using the contact form, or registering for the trial programme. Each is described below.

Cookies and storage

• bpt_sid — a random session identifier stored in your browser's localStorage. Rolls over after 30 minutes of inactivity.
• bpt_consent_dismissed — set to 1 when you dismiss the cookie banner.
• bp_notrack — set to 1 if you opt out (see below). When present, no tracking events are sent.
• _ga, _ga_* — Google Analytics cookies that measure traffic (new vs returning visits, sessions).
• _clck, _clsk, CLID — Microsoft Clarity cookies that link session recordings and de-duplicate visitors.
• bpt_trial_draft_v1 — only on the trial registration page. Holds a draft of what you have typed so a closed tab or an interruption does not lose it. It stays in your browser, is not sent to us, and clearing your site data removes it.

Opt out

You can opt out of analytics tracking entirely. Once opted out, no tracking events are sent from your browser.

Newsletter subscribers

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email and the topics you selected. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email, or via our contact form.

Trial programme registrations

If you register on our trial programme page, we collect considerably more than we do anywhere else on this site, because we are deciding who to send hardware to. Specifically:

• Who you are — your name, work email address, institution or company, and job role if you give one.
• What you run — the cell types, vessel formats, vessel sizes, brands, feed, working volume and number of vessels you tell us about, along with how you monitor cultures today and what you find difficult about it.
• What you want — how many sensors and feeders you would like to trial, how many you would buy, your funding route, and a budget figure or range if you give one.
• Your signature — the name or initials you type at the end, together with the date and time, which we record on our server rather than taking it from your browser.
• Technical details — a one-way hashed IP address, your browser's user agent string, a country derived from your connection, and which of our emails brought you to the page.

We save your answers before you finish. As soon as you have given a name, an email address and an institution, the page saves what you have entered and keeps saving as you go, so that closing the tab does not cost you the answers you have already given. The form says so at the point where you type them. If you abandon the form part-way, we hold what you had entered at that moment.

Why we are allowed to hold a part-finished form: our legitimate interest in not losing work you have already done, and in being able to follow up a registration that stopped half way. You can object to that at any time, and we will delete it. Once you submit, we rely on your consent instead, given by the box at the end of the form.

What we use it for: running the trial programme, contacting you about a place on it, and working out how many units to build and who to send them to. Nothing more. We do not sell it, we do not share it with anyone outside the trial programme, and we do not use it for advertising.

We email you a copy of everything you submitted. Registering is not an order and commits you to nothing.

Getting it back or getting rid of it. Email support@bioprocesstools.com and we will send you a copy of what we hold, correct it, or erase it. Erasure overwrites your name, email, institution and signature; we keep the anonymous answers about vessel sizes and quantities so our totals do not silently change, and nothing in what remains identifies you.

Email we send you

When we send a newsletter or a message about the trial programme, we record whether it was opened and whether you clicked a link in it. Opens are measured with a small invisible image, so they are approximate: some mail apps load it automatically without you reading anything, and others block it even when you do. Links carry a code identifying the message so we can tell which one brought someone to the site.

We use this to see which messages are worth sending and which are not. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also reply to any of them asking to be removed.

Who processes this for us

• Resend — sends our email and records opens and clicks.
• Supabase — hosts the database that holds subscriptions, feedback and trial registrations.
• Vercel — hosts the site itself.

Browser "Do Not Track"

If your browser sends the Do Not Track (DNT) signal, our analytics honour it automatically and no events are sent. This includes Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity.
